Gout is a painful form of arthritis caused by the excess of uric acid level in the body. Normally the uric acid produced in the body is flushed out in urine by the kidneys. At this level, the uric acid starts accumulating in and around the joints forming sharp, needle-like urate crystals. This condition of joints and the surrounding tissues causes pain, swelling and inflammation.

Increase of uric acid level differs in both genders. While men observe the increase after puberty women are tend to develop it at menopause. Therefore, men are likely to suffer from gouts at the early age of puberty while women might suffer from it during menopause stage.

Gout can be treated medically but following few eating habits can help control the gout attacks. Primarily, people suffering from gouts should avoid food rich in purines and proteins. Especially limiting the animal protein and increase the intake of plant based protein.
