How To Make An Apple Oatmeal Crisp

Fruits crisps are prepared by topping the fruit layer with a crumb-like topping. The toppings usually consist of crunchy and crumbly nuts and oats. The crumbly nature of the toppings comes from combining them with granulated sugar and cubed butter.

There are many varieties of the fruits crisps that are prepared but the best and the most popular among the crisps is the Apple Oatmeal Crisp. a few years ago, the apple oatmeal crisp was also referred to as the Brown Betty. Here is an easy and simple recipe for preparing the apple oatmeal crisp.




Preparation Time: 30 Minutes (Including Peeling, Coring And Slicing The Apples)

Cooking Time: 50 Minutes (Including Time Taken To Cool Down The Crisp)
Ingredients Required

Granulated brown sugar – 2 cups

Rolled oats – 2 cups

All-purpose flour – 2 cups

Unsalted butter, cold and cubed – 1 cup

Apples, peeled, cored and cubed – 5 cups

White granulated sugar – 1 cup

Powdered cinnamon – 3 teaspoons


Method Of Preparation

1. First prepare the apples. Peel the apples using a sharp vegetable peeler. Core the peeled apples and thinly slice them. Pour a dash of lemon juice over the apples to prevent them from turning brown. Set aside the apples until further use.

2. Take a square shaped baking tray and lightly grease it with oil or butter. You can even use a non-cooking spray to grease the tray. Greasing the tray is important to prevent the crisp from sticking to the bottom and the sides of the tray.

3. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F.

4. Take a large mixing bowl and add brown sugar, rolled oats, butter and flour in the bowl. Combine the ingredients using a fork until they resemble a crumb-like mixture. You can even use your hands to do the blending.



5. Take the already prepared baking tray and add half of the crumb mixture into the tray. Use your hands to press down the mixture evenly in the dish. Add the thinly sliced apples over the crumbly mixture and sprinkle apples with cinnamon and sugar. Spread the remaining half of the crumb mixture over the sugar layer. This will be the top layer of the crisp.

6. Place the baking dish in the pr-heated oven. Bake the apple crisp for 40-45 minutes. You will know that the crisp is ready when the oat mixture turns golden brown in color and the apple layer starts to bubble.

7. Remove the baking dish from the oven and let it cool for at least 15 minutes. Apple oatmeal crisp is ready. You can serve the dessert with a scoop of vanilla ice cream or with a dollop of whipped cream.



Tip

1. Use cubed butter for preparing the crumb-like texture of the crisp. Cold butter cuts better than softened butter and gives the crisp its crumb-like texture.

2. The same recipe can be used for preparing any fruit-oatmeal crisp. Simply substitute the apples in the recipe with your choice of fruit. The recipe can be used for making blue berry oatmeal crisp and cherry oatmeal crisp.
