Quinoa may be used as a grain, but actually it is a seed of a leafy green vegetable like Swiss chard, beets and spinach. Quinoa can be a healthy substitute for almost any type of grain.

Quinoa is a very old crop which grows in even mountain altitudes, dry climates and poor soil. It is cultivated in the Colorado Rocky Mountains and in South America. You can easily find quinoa in supermarkets and food stores.

Appearance And Taste

Quinoa is basically flat and its shape is pointed oval. Quinoa exists in a number of colors like red, black, brown and yellow. When quinoa is cooked it gets bigger to about 3 or 4 times of its original size.

The texture and taste of quinoa is somewhat like brown rice. When it is cooked it becomes fluffy, crunchy creamy and to some extent nutty. The slight nutty savor of quinoa makes it a substitute to white rice. It is a versatile grain because it can be prepared in various methods.

Nutritional Value Of Quinoa

There exists 2 gms of fat, 4.5 gms of protein and 23.4 gms of carbohydrates in one cup quinoa. It has high protein content than brown rice. It is high in carbohydrate which not only helps you to stay thin and fit but also increases your energy levels.

Preparation

Take one part of quinoa and two parts of water in a pan and bring it to boil. Now cover the pan with a lid and cook the grains in a low flame for about 15 minutes. When you can see the grains have become transparent, turn off the gas. If you want to have quinoa in breakfast, add some honey, berries or nuts in it and enjoy the taste.

Quinoa can also be included in stews, soups and pilafs. Because of their nutty flavor, at times quinoa is used in bagels, bread, pancakes, cookies and muffins. If you want to store quinoa for a long time, you can keep it in an airtight container in a cool and dry place, or in the refrigerator. You can also consume the leaves of the quinoa plant same as spinach leaves.

Health Benefits Of Quinoa

Quinoa contains magnesium which helps to maintain a good cardiovascular health. Magnesium relaxes the blood vessels, which in turn reduces the rates of heart arrhythmias, heart disease or hypertension.
